While area measures how much flat surface a shape covers, volume measures how much three-dimensional space an object occupies or how much water it can hold.

The Stacking Sheet Metaphor

The universal key to understanding the volume of any prism or cylinder is: Area of the Base × Height.

Imagine a single piece of printer paper. It has an area (Length × Width). Now stack 500 sheets of paper on top of each other. You have built a rectangular prism! The volume is simply that base area multiplied by how high you stacked it.

Rectangular Box Volume

Volume = Length × Width × Height

A box measuring 5 cm long, 4 cm wide, and 3 cm high: 5 × 4 × 3 = 60 cm³.

Cylinder Volume (Water Bottles)

The base is a circle (Area = π × r²). Multiply by the height:

Volume = π × r² × h
