One of the best places to practice math is the grocery store or shopping mall. When a store advertises "30% off today only!", how much will that video game or jacket actually cost at the cash register?

Step 1: Calculate the Discount

A hoodie costs $40. It is on sale for 25% off.

  • 25% is the same as 1/4.
  • $40 ÷ 4 = $10 discount.
  • Sale price: $40 - $10 = $30.

Step 2: Adding Sales Tax

If your state has an 8% sales tax:

  • Find 8% of the $30 sale price: 30 × 0.08 = $2.40.
  • Final checkout total: $30.00 + $2.40 = $32.40.

Practicing this with kids before checkout turns abstract decimals into real financial confidence.
