Dividing fractions sounds intimidating to young learners, but once they learn the catchy mnemonic KCF (Keep, Change, Flip), it becomes their favorite fraction operation.
The KCF Method
- Keep: Keep the first fraction exactly as it is.
- Change: Change the division sign (÷) into a multiplication sign (×).
- Flip: Flip the second fraction upside down (this is called finding the reciprocal).
Walkthrough Problem: 2/3 ÷ 4/5
- Keep:
2/3 - Change:
÷becomes× - Flip:
4/5becomes5/4 - Multiply across:
(2 × 5) / (3 × 4) = 10/12 - Simplify: Divide both by 2 = 5/6!
Why Does Flipping Work?
Think about whole numbers first: 10 ÷ 2 = 5. Notice that dividing by 2 is the exact same thing as multiplying by 1/2! When you divide by any number, you are multiplying by its reciprocal. Fractions follow the exact same mathematical law.
